Varieties

With the help of local people and fruit experts such as Alec West, ODG has been able to identify the characteristics and/or names of many of the existing trees. Some provide abundant crops with delicious fruit and include:

  • Plums (Prunus)
    - Myrobalan or Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera, originating in the Near East and cultivated in Britain for centuries)
    - Early Prolific (Rivers) (Prunus domestica, 1820)
    - Bullace or Green Damson (Prunus insititia)
  • Apples (Malus domestica)
    - Worcester Pearmain (1873)
    - Lane's Prince Albert (1841)
    - Howgate Wonder (1915-1916)
    - Lord Derby (1862)
    - Laxton's Fortune (1904)

We have also been able to buy new trees for the orchard, including:

  • Pears
    - Jargonelle (Pyrus communis, 1629)
    - Louise Bonne of Jersey (Pyrus communis, 1780)
    - Cadillac (1665)
This tree was planted on 21 October 2006 by Pat Blair, Factor of Lothian Estates, to commemorate National Apple Day and the launch of Orchard Development Group!
